Spiritual Growth Isn’t Just Bible Reading: Putting Off the Old Man and Walking Worthy (Ephesians 4)

In this message from the “Summer of Spiritual Strengthening” series, the pastor explains that spiritual growth is not automatically achieved by reading the Bible or attending church, but is defined biblically as conformity to Christ (Romans 8) and happens by God’s grace (Ephesians 2:8–10). Walking “worthy” in Ephesians 4 is presented as a gratitude-driven response to God’s love, marked by humility, meekness, patience, love, and pursuing unity in the church. Paul’s contrast between unbelieving “Gentile” living and Christlike living leads to practical steps: put off the “old man,” be renewed in the mind, and put on the “new man,” resulting in truth-telling, controlled anger, honest work and generosity, edifying speech, avoiding bitterness, and practicing kindness and forgiveness. The sermon concludes that real maturity is applying God’s truth through fellowship with Him, with a preview of Galatians’ works of the flesh and fruit of the Spirit next week.
