1 Samuel 15 Bible Study: Saul’s Pride, Compromise, and “To Obey Is Better Than Sacrifice”
This Bible study continues through 1 Samuel, focusing on chapter 15 as Saul’s defining moment of pride and disobedience. God, speaking through the prophet Samuel, commands Saul to utterly destroy the Amalekites and all they have as judgment for their past attacks on Israel, testing Saul’s complete obedience. Saul initially attacks but compromises by sparing Agag the king and keeping the best livestock while destroying what seemed worthless. God reveals Saul’s failure to Samuel, who is grieved and confronts Saul; Saul claims he obeyed, blames the people, and religiously justifies the spared animals as sacrifices. Samuel exposes Saul’s rebellion, teaches that obedience is better than sacrifice, equates rebellion with witchcraft and stubbornness with idolatry, and declares that because Saul rejected God’s word, God rejected him as king, while Saul offers a weak, self-protective confession.
