The Gospel's Call: Go and Teach All Nations

The central theme of this sermon is the imperative to make much of Christ, particularly in light of His resurrection as articulated in Matthew chapter 28. Pastor Jon Budd emphasizes the significance of believing in the reality of the risen Christ, standing firm against opposition, and going forth in His authority. Through poignant reflections on the resurrection narrative, he elucidates the transformative power of Christ's triumph over death, underscoring that this event is not merely historical but foundational to the believer's faith and mission. The sermon calls upon us to embrace our role in the Great Commission, sharing the Gospel with urgency and conviction, as we navigate a world rife with deception and doubt. Thus, we are reminded of our solemn duty to live out and proclaim the hope found in Jesus Christ, our risen King.

Hello and welcome to the Middletown Baptist Church podcast where we are proclaiming the truth to the world.
Speaker AMy name is Pastor Josh and I want to thank you for listening to this podcast.
Speaker AI hope that this podcast can be a blessing to you and strengthen you in the word of God.
Speaker ANow come along, let's look into the Bible and see what God has for us here today.
Speaker BSo your Bibles turn to Matthew chapter 28 this morning.
Speaker BMatthew 28.
Speaker BAnd it's hard keeping those tears back.
Speaker BComing up here just thinking about all that God has done here at Middletown Baptist Church these past three and a half years.
Speaker BAnd I promise you, I, I, I selected this sermon and this passage before this last week's event.
Speaker BSo there's nothing politically tied to this or anything.
Speaker BJust completely the Gospel of Christ, Christ's resurrection.
Speaker BAnd I was praying about it and I said, what was the, what would be the last message that I believe God want me to speak here?
Speaker BAnd the message today is to make much of Christ, to make much of our risen savior, risen king Jesus Christ.
Speaker BAppreciate the worship this morning.
Speaker BEvery single song was just so enriching and meditating on thinking about how we are praising our risen Savior and risen king.
Speaker BWell, the book of Matthew in the New Testament, there was a period of time for several hundred years right before Matthew that God seemed to be silent.
Speaker BWhere is God?
Speaker BWhere was this promised Messiah?
Speaker BWho is to come?
Speaker BWhat's, where is he?
Speaker BWho would he be?
Speaker BWe need some of the details.
Speaker BIn the Old Testament, he would come, be born in Bethlehem, he would be born of a virgin woman.
Speaker BBut how would that all be tied together?
Speaker BWell, Matthew wrote this book to prove that Jesus is the Messiah, the eternal king.
Speaker BNow Matthew was a Jewish tax collector.
Speaker BHe became one of Jesus disciples.
Speaker BThis Gospel forms that connecting link between that Old Testament period into the New Testament period.
Speaker BAnd so you see this emphasis on the fulfillment of prophecy.
Speaker BJesus says in Matthew 5:17, think not that I am come to destroy the law or the prophets.
Speaker BI am not coming to destroy, but to fulfill.
Speaker BMatthew is filled with messianic language.
Speaker BSon of David is used throughout Old Testament.
Speaker BReferences are 53 quotes and 76 other references.
Speaker BThe Gospel was not written as a chronological account.
Speaker BIts purpose was to present the clear evidence that Jesus is the Messiah, the Savior.
Speaker BToday we're looking at Matthew chapter 28.
Speaker BRight before this, we had a whole period of events that were going on here.
Speaker BYou had Christ's crucifixion.
Speaker BHe was scourged, he was beaten, he died, he was buried in the tomb.
Speaker BAnd Here in Matthew 28 we see some excellent news, the best news in the entire world.
Speaker BWe see in Matthew 28 here that Matthew records the last words of Jesus before his ascension.
Speaker BA bold mountain top commission for every believer in every every place, for all time.
Speaker BThese words are not merely good advice, they are our marching orders before Jesus gives us commission.
Speaker BMatthew unfolds the narrative of the resurrection, the ultimate validation of his authority to send us.
Speaker BIn this chapter we see three keys to living in the power of Christ's resurrection.
Speaker BNumber one, believe the resurrection.
Speaker BNumber two, stand firm against opposition.
Speaker BAnd number three, go in Christ authority.
Speaker BAnd today we're going to see that God wants you to live and to go in the resurrection of the power of Jesus Christ.
Speaker BAnd there's three truths.
Speaker BThe first truth is this.
Speaker BYou must believe in the reality of the risen Christ.
Speaker BLook at verse 1, Matthew 28, verse 1.
Speaker BIt reads in the end of the sabbath, as it began to dawn toward the first day of the week, came Mary Magdalene and the other Mary to see the sepulcher.
Speaker BAnd behold, there was a great earthquake.
Speaker BBut the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it.
Speaker BHis countenance was like lightning and his Raymond white as snow.
Speaker BAnd for fear of him the keepers did shake and became as dead men.
Speaker BWe will pause there for a minute.
Speaker BSo first we see that you must believe in the reality of the risen Christ.
Speaker BWe see here in verse one, it gives the time here, it gives a timestamp.
Speaker BIt says in the end of the Sabbath, literally after the Sabbath, making it the first day of the week, what had just taken place, Christ had just been crucified.
Speaker BHis disciples were tempted to abandon him.
Speaker BAnd Christ was taken.
Speaker BHe was isolated, he was scourged, he was crushed for our iniquities.
Speaker BIsaiah 53 talks about that, how he was crushed.
Speaker BHe was bruised for us.
Speaker BHe shed his blood for us.
Speaker BThe Bible declares that without the shedding of blood, there's no remission of sins, no forgiveness of sins.
Speaker BAnd so it was necessary, it was essential that Christ had his death.
Speaker BBut his death wasn't just the end of it, was it?
Speaker BNo.
Speaker BHe had to rise from the dead.
Speaker BThat's a clearing power and authority in his life that he would become the King and Lord of all.
Speaker BAnd so we see in verse one here, there's two ladies that come up to the resurrection, to the resurrection scene here.
Speaker BMary Magdalene and this other Mary.
Speaker BThese are faithful women who have remained at the cross.
Speaker BBut now they're here.
Speaker BFirst at the tomb now remember these ladies, they had just witnessed Christ's crucifixion.
Speaker BThey had just witnessed his death.
Speaker BAnd now they're here at the tomb.
Speaker BAnd they're, they're, they're, they're, they're waiting, they're seeing what's going, what's going to happen here.
Speaker BWhat happens?
Speaker BLook at the next verse there, verse two, it says, and behold, there was a great earthquake.
Speaker BFor the angel of the Lord descended from heaven and came and rolled back the stone from the door and sat upon it.
Speaker BAnd so there was this earthquake.
Speaker BIt was a divine disturbance that this was announcing.
Speaker BThere was a major intervention going on here.
Speaker BThere was, there was something major going on.
Speaker BYou have this angel, this angel appears, a message with heaven's authority.
Speaker BHis appearance was like lightning.
Speaker BAnd so you, and so just visualize this scene.
Speaker BYou see these two ladies are there at the entrance of this tomb.
Speaker BAnd then you see this angel has come.
Speaker BAnd it's like lightning, this flash and then a huge shaking quivering of the ground as earthquake happens.
Speaker BWhat's the responses of these people?
Speaker BAlways see the guards, they became as dead men.
Speaker BThey were fully alert, alive, right?
Speaker BBut then it says that their, that their response here, verse three, verse four, it says, for fear of him the keepers did shake and became as dead men.
Speaker BWhat were they being forced to recognize with?
Speaker BThey were being forced to recognize that God, the power of God, God's authority was intervening in this specific situation.
Speaker BThis angel, like comment, this angel was rolling away the stone like the rising sun, dispels the night.
Speaker BThe resurrection of Jesus shatters the darkness of fear and doubt forever.
Speaker BBut the resurrection truth is not just an event to acknowledge, it's a Savior to follow.
Speaker BLook at verse five.
Speaker BThe angel answered and said to the woman, fear not ye, for I know that ye seek Jesus, which was crucified.
Speaker BHe looks at these ladies over here, he knows they were at the cross, they were watching Christ be crucified.
Speaker BAnd he says, don't be afraid, don't be afraid, for I know who you're seeking.
Speaker BYou're trying to find this man who had just been crucified.
Speaker BBut don't be afraid.
Speaker BVerse 6, he is not here.
Speaker BCould you imagine?
Speaker BHe is not here, for he is risen as he said.
Speaker BAnd that right there is a specific phrase of truth that has completely transformed lives all around the world.
Speaker BThat simple truth that Christ is risen.
Speaker BHe was no longer in the tomb, he is risen as he said.
Speaker BAnd so we see this angel's announcement, this contrast.
Speaker BYou have these women and these guards, right?
Speaker BBelievers, we don't have any fear in this world.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker BBecause we have the eternal hope through Christ.
Speaker BAnd he says, it says, it says here that he literally said this.
Speaker BIt means it was a fulfillment to what he said, God, that he was bringing that news that I'm going to rise from the dead.
Speaker BAnd that happens.
Speaker BHe is risen.
Speaker BGod the Father raised him from the dead.
Speaker BLet's go on.
Speaker BIt says, come see the place of the Lord Lay.
Speaker BVerse 7.
Speaker BGo quickly.
Speaker BDon't just stop.
Speaker BGo and share.
Speaker BGo tell people.
Speaker BVerse 7.
Speaker BGo quickly.
Speaker BTell his disciples that he has risen from the dead.
Speaker BAnd behold, he goeth before you into Galilee and there shall ye see him.
Speaker BLo, I have told you.
Speaker BAnd see, we see the sequence here.
Speaker BWe see this, the sequence of experience with their force, of this encounter of Christ's resurrection.
Speaker BBut then they're commanded to go, go tell Christ's disciples, go and declare this to his disciples.
Speaker BVerse 8.
Speaker BThey departed quickly from the sepulcher with fear and great joy and did run to bring his disciples words.
Speaker BAnd so we see this mingled, these mingled emotions here, right?
Speaker BThere's this awe and there's this celebration.
Speaker BDo we have times in our lives where we have that fear and celebration, Right?
Speaker BFear and celebration.
Speaker BHere they were, they were excited because they said, look, Christ's death is in the past now.
Speaker BHe has risen from the dead.
Speaker BHe has risen.
Speaker BAnd they're going to declare it.
Speaker BVerse 9.
Speaker BAs they went to tell his disciples, behold, Jesus met them saying, all hail.
Speaker BAnd they came and held him by the feet and worshiped him.
Speaker BAnd so they obeyed God.
Speaker BThey obeyed the angel here, the messenger of God, saying, go and tell the disciples.
Speaker BAnd Jesus meets them on the way.
Speaker BCould you imagine this, this encounter here where Christ had just been, just died and he rose from the dead.
Speaker BAnd now these ladies who are waiting to go tell his disciples, they encounter Christ.
Speaker BThey encounter him.
Speaker BAnd he says, all hail.
Speaker BAnd what was their immediate response?
Speaker BWhat was their immediate response?
Speaker BLook at the last part of that verse there.
Speaker BIt says they and held him by the feet and worshiped him.
Speaker BTheir immediate response was not just a Jesus, you're here.
Speaker BIt was, I'm on your feet, Lord, you're resurrected from the dead.
Speaker BHallelujah.
Speaker BPraise you, God.
Speaker BYou are worthy of my worship.
Speaker BYou are worthy of my praise.
Speaker BYou are worthy of everything in my life.
Speaker BWe just see this humility from these ladies.
Speaker BThey, they, they, they go down to his feet and they worship him.
Speaker BThey say, you are God.
Speaker BYou are God.
Speaker BDo you remember the first time when you encountered Christ in your life?
Speaker BRemember where you were.
Speaker BI remember where I was.
Speaker BI was confused.
Speaker BI was lost.
Speaker BAnd I had.
Speaker BI didn't have a purpose in my life.
Speaker BI was just kind of doing my own thing.
Speaker BAnd then when I encountered Christ, the preacher was preaching about the last days, preaching about there was coming this punishment.
Speaker BOne day I was forced to recognize that I cannot do anything in on myself to save myself.
Speaker BAnd I encountered the risen Savior, Jesus Christ.
Speaker BRemember right after you got saved, that joy that filled your heart, the excitement of wanting to go and waiting to share.
Speaker BIs that joy still real today?
Speaker BIs that excitement still there?
Speaker BDo you remember where you came from?
Speaker BPaul said the Corinthians.
Speaker BHe said, for I delivered unto you first of all that which I also received.
Speaker BHow that Christ was Christ.
Speaker BChrist died for our sins according to the scriptures.
Speaker BHe was buried and he rose again according to the scriptures.
Speaker BPaul had that hope.
Speaker BPaul shared that hope with the Corinthians.
Speaker BAnd today we share that same hope with Christ.
Speaker BWe share that same resurrection.
Speaker BThat no matter what is going on in this world, that no matter what's going on with transitions and different changes and everything, that Christ is still the head of his church, that Christ is in charge.
Speaker BChrist is the one who we all serve.
Speaker BHe is the great shepherd, the shepherd who pursued after us and who continues to lead us and to guide us.
Speaker BLet's go on to the second point.
Speaker BHere you must stand firm against deception and opposition.
Speaker BLook at verse 11.
Speaker BI go back to verse 10.
Speaker BThen Jesus said to them, be not afraid.
Speaker BGo tell my brethren that they go into Galilee and there shall they see me.
Speaker BSo Jesus here says the same thing, don't be afraid.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker BWell, because back then you had the rulers, right?
Speaker BThey had just killed.
Speaker BThey had just killed Christ.
Speaker BAnd now, and now he's telling him to go and share it.
Speaker BDon't be afraid.
Speaker BDon't be afraid of the gospel.
Speaker BDon't be ashamed of the gospel of Christ where the power of God unto salvation to everyone that believe it to the Jew first and also the Greek.
Speaker BWe see here this, this command from Christ, don't be afraid.
Speaker BGo and tell my brethren.
Speaker BAnd they go into Galilee and there shall they be, see me.
Speaker BVerse 11.
Speaker BNow when they were going, behold some of the watch came into the city.
Speaker BSo now here's, here's some of that authority we're seeing coming out here and showing to the chief priests all the things that were done.
Speaker BAnd so you had these guards, right?
Speaker BThey heard what happened.
Speaker BVerse 12.
Speaker BWhen they were assembled with the elders, had taken counsel, they gave large money Unto the, unto the soldiers.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BReality hit right?
Speaker BOkay.
Speaker BThis has actually happened.
Speaker BThis truth is spreading.
Speaker BBut guess what?
Speaker BWe're going to spread lies.
Speaker BWe're going to go against what, what, what, what, What Jesus was talking about.
Speaker BBecause we still want to be, we still want to be the authority.
Speaker BWe still want to take control.
Speaker BWe want to manipulate the, the people to follow our narrative rather than following the narrative of this truth that Jesus has risen from the dead.
Speaker BThe very soldiers who had been there at the side of the tomb, the soldiers who had witnessed Christ's death, witnessed him dead going in that tomb.
Speaker BWho had witnessed the whole process of the angel having sat down on the tomb and having seen this lightning, shadow of lightning, appearance of this angel and this earthquake happening, they allow themselves to be bribed on.
Speaker BThey allow themselves to deceive.
Speaker BThey allow themselves.
Speaker BEven though they witnessed the exact same thing as the ladies had experience and they chose to take this bribery.
Speaker BVerse 13.
Speaker BWhat do they say?
Speaker BWhat was this lie saying?
Speaker BSay ye, his disciples came by night and stole him away while we slept.
Speaker BAnd if this come to the governor's ears, we will persuade him and secure you.
Speaker BSo now we see this fabricated story that's coming on the scene.
Speaker BThese disciples, they came by night, right?
Speaker BHow could the disciples come by night, right?
Speaker BThere's, there's some fault in this.
Speaker BThere's some faulty wording going on here.
Speaker BThis faulty logic, this is logical, it's inconsistent with the facts.
Speaker BA couple of, a couple of realities back then was the penalty on the soldier's head was death.
Speaker BWhy would they take the bribery, right?
Speaker BBut they took the bribery.
Speaker BChrist's disciple abandoned Jesus at the garden with the arrest, why would they want to show up now, right?
Speaker BThese disciples, they had been in Christ, right, When the hardest of hard times were then, oh yeah, they're going to come and they're going to come sneak it, sneak into the tomb of Jesus and take him away, right?
Speaker BNo, they feared the Roman guard.
Speaker BThey were afraid of them.
Speaker BWhy would they go in there?
Speaker BWhy would they want to go in there and try to mess with the Roman soldiers?
Speaker BHow could they know that the disciples took the body of Jesus because they were asleep?
Speaker BHow could, how could they know they weren't keeping their watch?
Speaker BBut this lie persists here.
Speaker BIt says it is unto this day, verse 15.
Speaker BSo they took the money and did as they were taught.
Speaker BAnd this saying is commonly reported among the Jews until this day.
Speaker BAnd this lie, this lie has been a lie that has been consistent all throughout time, ever since on the garden of Eden, right?
Speaker BYea, hath God said, doubting God's word, questioning God's word.
Speaker BAnd then you had that promise where God said, there's going to be a Messiah who's going to come.
Speaker BWhere sin originated with the fall of man, where man chose to disobey God.
Speaker BAnd as a result of that, God cursed the snake and said that there would be a seed that will come from the woman that would crush the head of the serpent, and that serpent would crush the heel of that seed.
Speaker BAnd we know that's Jesus Christ, that prophecy there.
Speaker BBut that lie has been going on all throughout time.
Speaker BAnd then we see this lie.
Speaker BIt continues to today.
Speaker BThere are influences.
Speaker BThere are people out there today who have witnessed the gospel.
Speaker BThey've witnessed people's lives being changed, and they've chose to reject it.
Speaker BThey've chose to say, I don't want it.
Speaker BAnd in fact, they're taking on their own lies.
Speaker BThey're taking on their own deception, and they're going out and they're trying to prevent people from receiving Christ as their personal savior.
Speaker BThey're trying.
Speaker BThey're.
Speaker BThey're trying to go out and to declare a false narrative from what the Bible says.
Speaker BAnd so we see that this lie has persisted to this day.
Speaker BThe resurrection.
Speaker BThis is like a floodlight on our dark street.
Speaker BHave you ever.
Speaker BHave you ever been out in a really, really dark night and.
Speaker BOr going outside your house and the floodlight pops on?
Speaker BAnd I know for me it's, you know, sometimes I was like, I'm just, you know, trying to walk out of the car or whatever, and then the floodlight pops on.
Speaker BAnd.
Speaker BBut with truth, though, truth, there's darkness.
Speaker BAnd when light pops on, there's two responses that people take, right?
Speaker BOne response is, oh, thank you for popping that light on, because I couldn't see where I was going.
Speaker BBut the other response is, why is that light on?
Speaker BKeep it away from me.
Speaker BI want to keep navigating and going in my own darkness.
Speaker BAnd so the lies of the world, they make the truth of the Great Commission all the more urgent.
Speaker BAnd it is very urgent.
Speaker BThis message that God has for us is absolutely urgent, that we maintain that we stand strong in the faith, being faithful to him.
Speaker BBut even before this trial had begun, even before this whole thing had happened, Christ had declared.
Speaker BIt was determined that Christ must die.
Speaker BThere was no innocent until proven guilty in this situation.
Speaker BFalse witnesses, they were sods.
Speaker BThey were sought to testify against Jesus.
Speaker BUsually the religious leaders, they went through a whole elaborate system of screening witnesses to Ensure justice.
Speaker BThese fault, these false leaders, they had gone, they had gone to the Roman government, they had gone to these soldiers and they had said, hey, go and go and spread this lie, spread this false deception.
Speaker BNo defense was sought for Jesus.
Speaker BIt wasn't even allowed.
Speaker BLuke 22:67, 71.
Speaker BJesus was basically put on this trial.
Speaker BIt was conducted at night.
Speaker BAnd this is actually illegal.
Speaker BBack during the time this trial was illegal, Mark 14, 53, 65 and Mark 15, verse 1.
Speaker BThis was illegal according to the religious leaders own laws.
Speaker BThey were completely going against their own practices.
Speaker BThey were being hypocritical.
Speaker BBut they knew, they knew what they were doing was wrong.
Speaker BBut they decided to do it instead.
Speaker BThey decided, they said, you know what?
Speaker BThere has been this exposing light.
Speaker BThere has been this truth that has been declared and I'm.
Speaker BAnd we're still going to do what we want to do.
Speaker BThe high priest put Jesus under oath, but then after putting him under oath, incriminating him for what he said.
Speaker BCases involving such serious charges were to be held, were to be tried only in the Sanhedrin's regular meeting place, not in the high priest home.
Speaker BSo you see, this entire thing was manipulated by these high priests.
Speaker BThey didn't care.
Speaker BThey were doing what they wanted to do by, by, by trying to manipulate this whole process through this entire thing.
Speaker BLet's what's the last truth today we're going to see is this.
Speaker BYou must go in the authority of the risen king.
Speaker BLook at verse 18.
Speaker BAnd the 11 disciples went away into Galilee, into a mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Speaker BAnd when they saw him, they worshiped him.
Speaker BBut some doubted.
Speaker BAnd Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Speaker BGo ye therefore and teach all nation, Baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever.
Speaker BI have commanded you.
Speaker BAnd lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
Speaker BSo we're seeing it throughout this entire passage.
Speaker BThere is this whole buildup going on.
Speaker BFirst part of Matthew 28, you see the Sabbath, you see, you see this, this first day of the week, this resurrection has happened.
Speaker BAnd this angel tells the ladies, go, go, go share, go to this to go to.
Speaker BGo to Christ's disciples.
Speaker BJesus told the ladies to go on their encounter with him.
Speaker BAnd then the disciples have been told, go to Galilee.
Speaker BAnd so they're all gathering in this place.
Speaker BThey're all going to this place.
Speaker BThis is a fulfillment of Jesus's Words back in chapter 26, verse 32, it says, as they came out, they found, oops, sorry, wrong chapter there.
Speaker B26, verse 32, it says, Peter answered and said unto him, it's again this.
Speaker BAll right, verse 32, there he goes.
Speaker BVerse 33, after I am risen again, I will go before you into Galilee.
Speaker BAnd so we see that Jesus himself had told the disciples, he said, I'm going to go before you.
Speaker BI'm going to meet you there at Galilee.
Speaker BMeet me there.
Speaker BAnd so you just see this alignment.
Speaker BYou see this connection of Jesus being intentional.
Speaker BHe's bringing his 11 disciples together at the Mount of Galilee into this mountain where Jesus had appointed them.
Speaker BSo then Jesus appears, right?
Speaker BFinally, right?
Speaker BHe went through this whole process of the disciples.
Speaker BThey had left, some of them had abandoned him.
Speaker BBut they all came together and they.
Speaker BThey're found.
Speaker BThey're finally here.
Speaker BChrist appears before them.
Speaker BWhat was their response?
Speaker BVerse 17, it says, when they saw him, they worshiped him.
Speaker BYou see this common theme, the resurrected savior, Jesus Christ.
Speaker BThe one who had said, if you tear this body down, this temple down, it'll be raised up again in three days.
Speaker BIt'll be rebuilt in three days.
Speaker BThe one who had said that, I'm coming to fulfill the Father's will.
Speaker BI'm the one who has come to fulfill what he has declared all throughout.
Speaker BAll throughout the past, right?
Speaker BThat one seed, that one deliverer who would be that hope?
Speaker BIt was Jesus.
Speaker BAnd he said, I'm going to come.
Speaker BI'm going to live that life.
Speaker BHe gave his life as a ransom for many.
Speaker BHe gave it up willingly.
Speaker BHe said himself, he said, I give my life willingly as a sheep before her share is his.
Speaker BDumb.
Speaker BHe did not open his mouth.
Speaker BHe humbled himself.
Speaker BPhilippians 2 talks about how he humbled himself.
Speaker BAnd he gave himself for us.
Speaker BHumbled himself.
Speaker BThe death of the cross.
Speaker BAnd these disciples here, all these thoughts, all of these things here at this time, these disciples are seeing this.
Speaker BIt says, what do they do?
Speaker BThey worship him, right?
Speaker BYou're risen from the dead.
Speaker BWow.
Speaker BIt actually happened.
Speaker BIt happened.
Speaker BSome of them.
Speaker BAnd it says here, though, even.
Speaker BEven back during this time, it says that some of them doubted.
Speaker BSome of them were still doubting.
Speaker BSome of them were still struggling.
Speaker BIs this really real?
Speaker BThis is.
Speaker BDid this actually happen?
Speaker BI got a question for you.
Speaker BWhere is your faith with Christ?
Speaker BLet's put aside.
Speaker BLet's put aside everything that's going on in the world, but let's take this simple message of the Gospel of Christ.
Speaker BThe death, the burial and the resurrection of Christ.
Speaker BAre you living in that reality today?
Speaker BHave you forgotten what Christ has done for you?
Speaker BAnd you say, well, of course not.
Speaker BI mean, it's easy, right?
Speaker BJesus died on the cross.
Speaker BHe was buried.
Speaker BHe rose again from the dead.
Speaker BNo, but is that resurrection, the eternal life, that hope?
Speaker BAre you living with the reality that you have a hope in Christ, that your life is a continual thing?
Speaker BThis isn't the end all be all here, right?
Speaker BIt isn't just, okay, you got saved this one day and then you stop living for God, then you stop living for the Lord.
Speaker BNo, it is a continual decision, a continual lifestyle decision.
Speaker BI'm going to continue to obey and to follow Christ.
Speaker BAnd you know, Pastor Josh had mentioned back in February, when I was first made aware of this transition here, where it was like, lord, I love it here.
Speaker BI love it here at Middletown.
Speaker BAnd as we're going through this transition, Joy and I both, you were like, lord, this is where you're calling us to go.
Speaker BAnd we have to be obedient to what he tells us to do.
Speaker BWe must obey the message.
Speaker BAnd I love the theme this year, Pastor Joshua and preaching you on the theme of going, going and obeying the Great Commission.
Speaker BAre you going in your life?
Speaker BIt could be anything.
Speaker BIt could be in your workplace.
Speaker BIt could be in your home with your children.
Speaker BIt could be as you get together with some.
Speaker BWith some of your friends at a local place.
Speaker BIt could be when you're taking your kids into going grocery shopping, right?
Speaker BAll throughout your life, the.
Speaker BThe life of following Christ, the life of realizing that this light is not the end.
Speaker BAll be all.
Speaker BI must be sharing Christ with other people around me.
Speaker BI must be obedient by declaring it.
Speaker BI must be obedient by going.
Speaker BVerse 18, it says, Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, all power is given unto me in heaven and in earth.
Speaker BIt's important that I bring that up, right?
Speaker BWe're not just going out doing this ourselves.
Speaker BBut it says all, all authority, all power is given unto Christ.
Speaker BThe supreme claim that Christ says.
Speaker BHe says the authority, the right, the jurisdiction, the universal sovereignty is given to Christ.
Speaker BAnd he is commissioning every single one of us to go, every single one of us to go to fulfill that great Commission.
Speaker BSo where is that for you in your life?
Speaker BAre you being faithful, leading your families in the home?
Speaker BAre you being faithful in taking care of your children in your home?
Speaker BAre you being faithful?
Speaker BMaybe.
Speaker BMaybe you don't have any children.
Speaker BMaybe you say, you know what?
Speaker BThere is somebody who God's been Putting in my heart.
Speaker BMaybe it's a spiritual son, maybe it's a spiritual daughter, maybe it's a spiritual brother, spiritual sister in Christ that God's been burning on your heart about.
Speaker BAre you obeying God by being a gospel witness to that person?
Speaker BYou see that person sitting in your workplace.
Speaker BYou see that person discouraged?
Speaker BYou see that maybe get your wife at home, she's exhausted, she's wiped out, right?
Speaker BHoney, I'm gonna help you out, right?
Speaker BBeing a faithful husband, being faithful wherever God has you doing in your life.
Speaker BWe see here that we're not just going in our authority, but we're going in the authority of Christ.
Speaker BNow we see the Great Commission and this, this is the most exciting part.
Speaker BI mean, it's all exciting, right?
Speaker BBut here is the really exciting part.
Speaker BAnd this is what really is at the core of everything.
Speaker BFor, for this charge for us today.
Speaker BWe see Christ says in verse 19, he says, Go ye therefore and teach all nations, baptizing them them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever.
Speaker BI have commanded you.
Speaker BAnd lo, I am with you alway even unto the end of the world.
Speaker BAnd so we see this Great Commission.
Speaker BAnd so people have called it right, this Great Commission.
Speaker BThis is, this is a final command that Christ gives his disciples to go, go and to declare.
Speaker BBut what does he say to go do, right?
Speaker BI mean, what am I supposed to do?
Speaker BHe says that go you therefore, right?
Speaker BSo what was that first commandment?
Speaker BRemember back in the context here, what did the angel told the disciples to do?
Speaker BHe told the disciples, he told the ladies to go, right?
Speaker BNow Christ is here commissioning his disciples to say, go, go share the gospel.
Speaker BWhen was the last time that you have personally witnessed to somebody who you saw was in that need of needing a savior in their life?
Speaker BMaybe you're in the, maybe in the audience today and you say, you know what I have.
Speaker BWhat is salvation?
Speaker BWhat are you talking about?
Speaker BWell, the gospel is very, very simple to understand, but there is a heavy commitment to it following up after that.
Speaker BAnd I'll clarify.
Speaker BThe gospel is simple.
Speaker BRomans 3, 23 states, for all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Speaker BNow, who has sinned?
Speaker BWhat does that verse say?
Speaker BThere it is.
Speaker BAll, all of us have sinned.
Speaker BWe've all done bad things.
Speaker BI mean, and there's clearly wrong things going on in our world, right?
Speaker BYou can agree with me.
Speaker BThere's sin in the world.
Speaker BAll have sinned.
Speaker BCome short of the glory of God.
Speaker BRomans 6:23 states, the wages of sin is death.
Speaker BThe payment of our sin is death.
Speaker BAnd the sin.
Speaker BThat's the, that's all the wrong things that we have done.
Speaker BLying, stealing, cheating, adultery.
Speaker BAll those different.
Speaker BAll those different things.
Speaker BIf you've done one of those.
Speaker BJames, the book of James, he says, if you have broken the law in one point, you're guilty of the entire thing.
Speaker BI heard an awesome illustration this last week where you have, you have all these different chains.
Speaker BIt's a chain, different links coming down, right?
Speaker BAnd how many links does it take for that chain to break before you, before you, before you fall?
Speaker BIt only takes one of those links.
Speaker BAnd that, and that's.
Speaker BAnd that's all the different commandments, right?
Speaker BAll the different sins.
Speaker BIf you do one guess what you're guilty of.
Speaker BAll of it.
Speaker BThat's what the Bible says.
Speaker BBut there's hope.
Speaker BThe wages of our sin is death.
Speaker BBut the gift of God we've been talking about today, the gift of God is eternal life through Jesus Christ Our Lord.
Speaker BJohn 3:16.
Speaker BFor God so loved the world.
Speaker BGod so loved every single one of you.
Speaker BWhether you're here in person, you're watching online, everybody in the entire world, God loves you.
Speaker BAnd God sent his only begotten son for you.
Speaker BThey say, well, that's great, but what do I do with that?
Speaker BRomans 10, 9, 10 states that if thou shalt confess with thy mouth, the Lord Jesus, right?
Speaker BYou say, lord, I believe that you are God.
Speaker BBelieve in thine heart that God hath raised him from the dead.
Speaker BI believe, Lord, that you paid for my sins, that you died on the cross, that you rose again from the dead.
Speaker BI believe, and I trust in you to be my savior.
Speaker BI believe in thy heart that God hath raised him from the dead.
Speaker BThou shalt be saved.
Speaker BYou could be saved today.
Speaker BYou can be saved before you walk out these doors, before this live stream cuts off, you can be saved right now by acknowledging that God saying, lord, I have sinned.
Speaker BI acknowledge that you are God, that you rose from the dead and that you paid for my sins on the cross.
Speaker BNow, also with that, Pastor Johnson mentioned this before recently.
Speaker BIt's been the same idea with me, where just because you get saved, it doesn't stop there.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BAnd I'm sure, as you know, some newer believers in here, you think to yourself, oh, okay, what am I supposed to do?
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BWell, there's.
Speaker BThere's some, thankfully, there's.
Speaker BThere's some easy steps that you can take.
Speaker BThe first step is to get A Bible.
Speaker BAnd just to read the Bible for yourself.
Speaker BThe Bible says that thy word is a lamp unto my feet and light unto my path.
Speaker BHow are you Christian?
Speaker BHow are you doing in your time with God?
Speaker BNew Christian.
Speaker BThis is.
Speaker BThis is a good first step here to get a Bible.
Speaker BSecond thing is this.
Speaker BPray, talk to God yourself.
Speaker BHebrews 4 talks about it, says that we have a great high priest who has passed in the heavens.
Speaker BJesus, the Son of God.
Speaker BLet us hold fast our profession.
Speaker BLet us hold fast the calling that God has for us, that we are sons, we are daughters of a living king, of a living God.
Speaker BHe is our father.
Speaker BRomans 8 talks about that we have this liberty with Christ.
Speaker BWe have this freedom to approach him ourselves.
Speaker BAnd so these are some simple steps to take.
Speaker BWe were called to go, and now listen.
Speaker BSo you're reading the Bible for yourself.
Speaker BYou're praying, you're talking to God.
Speaker BBut now here's where the next step comes in.
Speaker BLook at verse 19.
Speaker BIt says, go ye therefore.
Speaker BThen it says to teach all nations.
Speaker BGod is not designed for you as a Christian to sit in your seat and do nothing else with your life.
Speaker BGod has called every single one of us in here to find where God has us to get plugged in and discernment.
Speaker BGod has called you to get involved.
Speaker BGod has called you.
Speaker BYou're a part of the body of Christ.
Speaker BGod has given you a gift.
Speaker BGod has commissioned you in this great commission to go and it says here to teach all nations.
Speaker BThat literally means there to make disciples, to find people who you can lead.
Speaker BWho you can lead them through the gospel and say, here's how you can be saved.
Speaker BPeople who get saved, then after they get saved, take them and then grow them and disciple them.
Speaker BSee, salvation is just not.
Speaker BIsn't just the finish line.
Speaker BWe are called to live a life of obedience to him, walking and knowing God, following God, reading his Word, spending time and then going and investing in other people around us.
Speaker BAre you investing in somebody else today?
Speaker BYou as a believer, are you investing in somebody else?
Speaker BWell, that's kind of hard because once I start telling somebody else how they're supposed to live their life, what comes back at you?
Speaker BWell, are you doing that?
Speaker BRight.
Speaker BSo it's a challenge, right?
Speaker BJust like for these disciples, they're being.
Speaker BThey're being commissioned here, right?
Speaker BThis is a very heavy challenge, but it is an encouraging challenge because you are not doing it in your own authority.
Speaker BYou're doing it in God's authority.
Speaker BYou're doing it with the authority of Christ.
Speaker BHis power in your life, go ye therefore teach all nations.
Speaker BAnd then there's an identity that comes in with that, a public identity.
Speaker BYou look at the next part of that verse, it says, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Ghost.
Speaker BAnd so now there's baptizing, right now there's a public identity.
Speaker BOkay, so you're saved.
Speaker BYou're learning how to walk with God.
Speaker BYou're committing to coming, to being connected with the church, getting.
Speaker BGetting plugged in other people.
Speaker BI want me to learn how to be discipling disciple, to be a disciple and discipling somebody else.
Speaker BBut then there's also a baptism.
Speaker BAnd baptism is that public identity that each of us as believers, we're called to do.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker BBecause just as these people, right, the angel tells the lady, Jesus tells his disciples, right, to go.
Speaker BThey're taking a public identity with Christ.
Speaker BAnd I'm not sure if you've realized that, but when you receive Christ as Savior, you are now taking on his identity.
Speaker BAnd there have been people in history who have taken on that identity.
Speaker BThey have taken on that this commission, and they have died for it.
Speaker BThey have died.
Speaker BAnd as a result of that, the church.
Speaker BThe church grows in times of persecution, the church has grown through history of believers who have gone through those hardships to see how his church comes together, to live for God, to follow God, to say, look, this brother over here has died.
Speaker BLet's continue picking up the torch.
Speaker BLet's keep living the faith.
Speaker BLet's keep passing on the torch of the gospel and that gospel message, making disciples and baptism, taking that public identity, coming up here and making your statement to say, I identify with Christ.
Speaker BIf you have not been baptized yet, talk to Pastor Josh.
Speaker BMake that next step in your life personally for what you need to do between you and him.
Speaker BSo there's this great commission.
Speaker BBut then look at the.
Speaker BThe next part here.
Speaker BIn verse 20, it says, Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I've commanded you.
Speaker BAnd lo, I am with you always, even unto the end of the world.
Speaker BAnd I should make.
Speaker BI should make that a point.
Speaker BThe first part of verse 20, there we're saying, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I've commanded you.
Speaker BEverything that Christ has shown to you, everything that you have learned in your own walk with Him.
Speaker BGod wants you to share that with others.
Speaker BAnd so teaching them to observe all these things.
Speaker BThe last part of verse 20, he says, Lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of this constant, unbroken presence, you have Christ once again as that great high priest, that faithful God who will lead you.
Speaker BHe will guide you.
Speaker BHe will strengthen you.
Speaker BWhen you're weak, he will lead you.
Speaker BWhen you have times of loss in your life, he will fill the void in your life.
Speaker BHis love.
Speaker BHe'll fill you with his love.
Speaker BHe'll fill you with his peace.
Speaker BHe'll fill you with the ability to keep moving on for what he's called you to do.
Speaker BWhen a commander gives his final orders before departing, the troops carry them out.
Speaker BMatthew 28 is Jesus's final earthly words to his followers here.
Speaker BAnd he comes wrapped in his resurrection, glory, unwavering authority and unfailing presence of our great commander in chief, Jesus Christ himself.
Speaker BThere's three different truths here tonight.
Speaker BI want to emphasize these things as we're wrapping up here.
Speaker BNumber one, the tomb is empty.
Speaker BBelieve it.
Speaker BBelieve it and talk about it.
Speaker BDon't be ashamed of the gospel.
Speaker BRomans 1:16.
Speaker BPaul said, I am not ashamed of the Gospel of Christ.
Speaker BFor it is the power of God unto salvation to everyone who believes, everyone that believeth you believe Christ as Savior.
Speaker BYou have his power in your life to do what he wants you to do to fulfill that great commission.
Speaker BNumber two.
Speaker BThe world will lie and the world does lie.
Speaker BBut we are called to stand firm.
Speaker BWe are called to stand firm in grace, in humility, but to stand firm with the truths.
Speaker BNot.
Speaker BNot compromising on what the Bible says and not compromising on the Gospel.
Speaker BNot compromising on this commission that God has given us.
Speaker BAnd lastly, the king reigns.
Speaker BJesus reigns.
Speaker BHe is the King of kings, the Lord of lords.
Speaker BAnd one day we're all going to gather together with him, with him for all eternity to be able to praise and worship him.
Speaker BBeloved, our time together in this place is coming to an end.
Speaker BBut the mission does not stop until he comes.
Speaker BLive in the resurrection of the power of Christ.
Speaker BGo, obey and trust Him.
Speaker BAnd we meet again.
Speaker BWhether it's here in this life or if it's not, until glory.
Speaker BMay he find us, each of us being faithful to sharing and declaring and living out that gospel message.
Speaker BLet's pray.
Speaker BDear Father, I thank you so much for this passage.
Speaker BLord, I thank you for this encouraging, these encouraging words, Lord, that we find of how you.
Speaker BYou rose from the dead, Lord, that message that you called these disciples here, Lord, these ladies to go and tell.
Speaker BAnd I pray that you please help us, Lord, to be faithful to kind of that gospel message to those around us.
Speaker BJesus name I pray.
