Faith Amidst Trials: The Promise of Romans 8:28
This podcast episode centers on the profound biblical principle articulated in Romans 8:28, which posits that "all things work together for good to them that love God." Pastor Josh Massaro invites us to critically examine the common misinterpretations of this verse, emphasizing the necessity of context to fully grasp its true meaning. He asserts that the assurance of divine goodness does not imply an absence of suffering or adversity, but rather a sovereign orchestration of events by God for the ultimate benefit of His followers. Furthermore, Pastor Massaro encourages a shift in perspective, urging listeners to align their expectations with God's purposes, rather than their own limited understanding. This discourse is a call to cultivate a deeper faith, recognizing that God's plan transcends our immediate circumstances and leads to eternal good.
Takeaways:
- In Romans 8:28, it is emphasized that all things work together for good to those who love God, a profound truth that invites deeper contemplation and faith.
- The understanding of God's sovereignty is crucial; recognizing that He is in control of all circumstances leads to a more profound trust in His plan.
- Contextual interpretation of Scripture is vital; taking verses out of context can lead to misunderstandings of God's intentions and promises.
- We must defer our personal expectations to God's outcomes, trusting that His reality may differ significantly from our desires and aspirations.
- Seeing life from an eternal perspective enables believers to navigate hardships with grace, knowing that temporary struggles contribute to a greater purpose.
- Ultimately, the promise of Romans 8:28 is specifically for believers, emphasizing the importance of being part of God's family to truly experience His goodness.

Hello and welcome to the Middletown Baptist Church Podcast, where we are proclaiming the truth to the world.
Speaker AMy name is Pastor Josh and I want to thank you for listening to this podcast.
Speaker AI hope that this podcast can be a blessing to you and strengthen you in the word of God.
Speaker ANow come along, let's look into the Bible and see what God has for us here today.
Speaker BIf you have your Bibles, I would love for you to turn there with me.
Speaker CRomans, chapter eight.
Speaker CAnd today we're going to be looking at just one verse as our main text.
Speaker CThis is probably one of the most quoted verses in all of the Bible.
Speaker BI would say that it is also one of the most misused verses in all of the Bible because of many.
Speaker CPeople'S way that they apply this to their life or at least maybe try to hope that this means that everything is going to go well for them, everything is going to go the way that they expected.
Speaker BAnd some of you know where I'm.
Speaker CGoing to turn Here it's Romans 8:28.
Speaker CRomans 8:28 is a verse that you hear all the time.
Speaker BIt's a verse that you might see on a card.
Speaker BIt might be a verse that you've heard preached before.
Speaker CBut what I would like us to do this morning is to look at Romans 8:28 from a biblical perspective.
Speaker CContext is key.
Speaker CWe have to understand what comes before the verse and what comes after the verse.
Speaker CWe have to understand in the bigger picture what the whole word of God has to say.
Speaker CBecause to take one verse out of context means to have one belief that is off from what God intends us to understand, believe, and live in.
Speaker CAnd so in Romans 8:28, we see that this verse basically says, and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to.
Speaker BThem who are called according to the per.
Speaker BAccording to his purpose.
Speaker CAnd so the Bible says here that.
Speaker BAll things work together for good.
Speaker CNow, many of you might think, well, you know what?
Speaker CI've looked at my life and I don't think things are working for good.
Speaker CHow can this verse say that all.
Speaker BThings work together for good?
Speaker CI'm a believer, but my life isn't that good.
Speaker CIt must mean this is where a lot of people turn.
Speaker CA lot of people say, well, that must mean that this isn't true or that God is not consistent.
Speaker CYou know, anytime we get to a place in scripture that in some way is confusing, or we think that there's an inconsistency, let me just tell you here this morning, it's not the Bible.
Speaker BThat'S inconsistent, it is we who are inconsistent.
Speaker CAnd so when we come to a verse that's difficult to understand or even maybe difficult to apply, we don't look at the Word as the problem.
Speaker CTry to get the Word to fit into our way of thinking.
Speaker CWe have to understand that the Word.
Speaker BOf God is perfect, that God is.
Speaker CPerfect, that he never lies, that he's consistent in a world of inconsistency, and recognize that we are the ones who are inconsistent.
Speaker CAnd recognize that we need to grow in our understanding of him and His Word so that we can come in line with the truth of the Word of God.
Speaker CSo this morning the question is, do we believe that God's Word is true?
Speaker CWell, we know from passage after passage that the Bible claims that it is perfect.
Speaker CThe Bible says that it is not going to contradict itself.
Speaker CAnd we know that through various aspects that the Bible is consistent, that it is directly the Word of God.
Speaker CTherefore, we have to understand that God and His Word are the consistent truths in a world of inconsistency.
Speaker CI want you to think about that phrase this morning.
Speaker CWe live in a world of inconsistency.
Speaker CWe look at the world from a perspective of a limited human being.
Speaker CTherefore, we see things happening.
Speaker CAnd we think because we're humans and because we're limited, that things are out of control, that.
Speaker CThat things are chaotic in many ways.
Speaker COn the circumstantial level, they are.
Speaker CBut on the bigger picture of God's plan, everything is under control.
Speaker CGod is sovereign.
Speaker CGod is completely powerful in every way to look at the inconsistency of this world and make things consistent with his character and with his goodness.
Speaker CAnd so we have to understand that before we get any further, because in the Christian life, we have a lot of expectations.
Speaker CIf we read verse 28 here in Romans chapter 8 with a selfish expectation, what would it read like?
Speaker CIt would say, and we know that all things work together for good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to, to his purpose, meaning this.
Speaker CEverything's going to work out for me.
Speaker CIf I love God, everything's going to happen the way that I expect it to happen.
Speaker CWell, point number one is that this verse is not talking about our expectations.
Speaker BThis verse is talking about God's reality.
Speaker CAnd so when we see here that it says all things work together for good, it doesn't mean that, hey, I have wants, I have desires, I. I have expectations.
Speaker CTherefore God must do these things or he's not consistent.
Speaker CIt just means that God is going to take all of our flaws, all of our issues, all of the inconsistency in this world and make those things good because of his power and because of his all knowing nature and because of his eternality.
Speaker CAnd what we can see here in this case is that this verse is not talking about all things good going the way that we expect.
Speaker CIt also is sometimes misquoted this way that this isn't talking about God making our life good, it's just he's good.
Speaker CAnd then we have to just be.
Speaker BMiserable in this world.
Speaker CAnd so a lot of people will read this and they'll say, and we know that all things work together for his good, meaning I have to suffer in this world, but eventually he gets the glory.
Speaker CWell, that's not what this says, although we know that God will work all things out for his good.
Speaker CHis good is our good, therefore it's good for us.
Speaker CSo, so how do these things reconcile?
Speaker CBecause many of you say, you know what, Pastor Josh, I know that you're.
Speaker BSaying that all things work together for good.
Speaker CI know the Bible says all things.
Speaker BWork together for good, but the way.
Speaker CThat I see things right now, I don't see things working together for good.
Speaker CAnd we're going to talk about this verse, we're going to dig deeper into this verse.
Speaker CBut anytime we have a confusing moment, anytime we come to a place where we're confusing, thinking that maybe this isn't what we expected it to be, we have to come back and say, where do I need to grow?
Speaker CAnd we need to ask God for wisdom to allow us to grow into a place of spiritual maturity where we.
Speaker BCan see the bigger picture.
Speaker CAnd so I want you to see that here this morning.
Speaker CSo I want you to see point number one.
Speaker CWe must defer our expectations to God's.
Speaker BOutcome, to God's reality.
Speaker BExpectations are a very confusing thing because.
Speaker CSometimes we think that something should be a certain way, but at the end of the day, it doesn't happen that way.
Speaker CAnd we think that God doesn't love us.
Speaker CThis same thing could be seen even within a marriage.
Speaker CI know when I first got married I had expectations of what a marriage would be or should be, or how my wife should act or how I should act.
Speaker CAnd many of those expectations were built upon lies.
Speaker CMaybe it was because I watched a TV show and this is what happened.
Speaker CAnd so I thought that's what should happen.
Speaker COr maybe I watched another couple and I thought, well, that person does this, so that should happen this way.
Speaker CSometimes in even a human relationship, we can put unfair or what we would say, even inappropriate expectations upon something that.
Speaker BReally shouldn't be the case.
Speaker CAnd that's the same thing we do with God.
Speaker CSometimes we look at God and we say, God, you must fit into my box.
Speaker CYou have to work the way that I work.
Speaker CYou have to answer my prayers the way that I'm asking.
Speaker CAnd ultimately, what we see here is that verse 28 is not about getting the things that we want.
Speaker CIt's about deferring our expectations to God's outcome and being good with that and understanding that God is good.
Speaker CWhat we think about is when it says in the Bible, trust in the Lord and lean not into thine own understanding.
Speaker CIn all thy ways, acknowledge him and he'll direct our paths.
Speaker CIt's essentially saying this.
Speaker CWe acknowledge that God is good.
Speaker CAnd then as God allows certain things to happen in our life, and as sometimes we make mistakes in our life, God can make those things good.
Speaker CAnd ultimately he will make those things good.
Speaker CIf we go a little bit further, we have to understand that that doesn't necessarily mean that life will be smooth.
Speaker CSometimes people think that, well, if I have faith, everything's going to be okay.
Speaker CAnd there's a movement today called the Word of Faith movement which essentially says this.
Speaker CIf you have enough faith, you will get what you want.
Speaker CWell, I want to take you to a passage of Scripture that teaches something completely different.
Speaker CBecause what does Romans 8:28 say?
Speaker CThis is a promise not for people who are living in sin.
Speaker CThis is not a promise for those who are living in rebellion and ultimately living unsaved lives.
Speaker CIt's for those, as it says there, to them, that love God, to them who are the called.
Speaker CThe called are those that are believers, those that have answered the call from God, the gift of grace.
Speaker CAnd so it says here that this is for Christians.
Speaker CAnd so if Christians have enough faith, won't God just give us everything that we want?
Speaker CWon't he save us from every trial?
Speaker CWell, not in the circumstantial.
Speaker CHere and now I want to take you to a passage of Scripture that speaks to that.
Speaker CIt's in Hebrews chapter 11.
Speaker CMost of you know Hebrews chapter 11 as the hall of faith.
Speaker CHebrews chapter 11 gives us the definition of faith in verse one.
Speaker CThen in verse six, it tells us why faith is so important.
Speaker CAnd so verse one, faith is believing.
Speaker BIn something that we don't see.
Speaker CVerse 6 tells us that it's impossible to please God without faith.
Speaker CAnd then we see later on in the chapter many examples of individuals in the Old Testament who had faith and.
Speaker BWere spared in certain ways.
Speaker BSo, for example, you have Abraham, you.
Speaker BYou have Moses, and you have Jacob, and you have Joseph.
Speaker CAll these characters that we are aware of, that God spared them, not in every situation, but he spared them from.
Speaker BCertain struggles and gave them hope and victory on this side of heaven.
Speaker CAnd that sounds good.
Speaker CAnd that's where we usually end.
Speaker CBut later on in the book of Hebrews, it talks about how there are individuals who did have faith but then faced a lot of difficulties.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker CAnd actually what we see is here, on this side of heaven, they didn't have victory.
Speaker CI want you to see something very quickly with me, Hebrews chapter 11.
Speaker BAnd I want you to go to verse number 35.
Speaker CVerse 35.
Speaker CWe see all the examples of all these people were having the victory.
Speaker CRahab perished, not right.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker CAnd that was all led up to where it talks about Gideon and Samson and David and Samuel.
Speaker CBut then we see verse 35, it says, women receive their dead, raised to life again.
Speaker CWell, that's a good thing.
Speaker CBut then we see there that there is a break.
Speaker CAnd it says, and others were tortured, not accepting deliverance that they might obtain a better resurrection.
Speaker CMeaning there were going to be some that were tortured and eventually killed, and God did not spare them in that time.
Speaker CGod did not take them out of that torture.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker CBecause there's a better blessing that is to come.
Speaker CFurther on it says, and others had trial of cruel mockings.
Speaker CBy the way, these are people with faith.
Speaker CThese are people that are being honored here in Hebrews, chapter 11 says, and others had trial of cruel mockings and scourgings, yea, moreover, of bonds and imprisonment.
Speaker BFurther on it says, they were stoned.
Speaker CThey were sawn asunder, were tempted, were slain with the sword.
Speaker CThey wandered about in sheepskin and goatskins, being destitute, afflicted, tormented, of whom the world was not worthy.
Speaker CThey wandered in deserts and in mountains and in dens and caves of the earth.
Speaker CAnd these all, having obtained a good report through faith, received not the promise, meaning God did not give them what they were asking for by allowing them to get out of that trial in that very moment.
Speaker CVerse 40.
Speaker CGod having provided some better thing for us, that's glorification.
Speaker CThat's being with him one day.
Speaker CAnd they without us should not be.
Speaker BMade perfect or complete in him.
Speaker CAnd so ultimately, what we see here is that there are individuals that walk this earth that have faith in God, that God does in that moment answer their prayer and give them what we.
Speaker BWould consider to be good circumstances.
Speaker CBut others that trust in God don't see those good circumstances coming to pass.
Speaker BHere on this side of heaven.
Speaker CAnd does that mean that God loves one more than the other?
Speaker CNo, because ultimately the glorification which we've been talking about in Romans chapter 8, glorification being with him, united with him.
Speaker CRemember Romans 8:18.
Speaker CGo back.
Speaker CWhat does he say?
Speaker CRemember, this is Paul writing, who did face persecutions, who eventually was martyred for his faith.
Speaker CHe, he says in Romans 8:18.
Speaker CFor I reckon, I believe that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory.
Speaker BWhich shall be revealed in us.
Speaker CSo, number one, we must defer our expectations to God's outcome.
Speaker CBut number two, we must see it from the eternal perspective.
Speaker BThe big picture.
Speaker CIf we are Christians that are basing our confidence and our faith and our peace in circumstances of today, we are seeing things from the narrow focus.
Speaker CAnd what God is saying here is this.
Speaker CIt's bigger than what's happening today, it's bigger than what's happening tomorrow.
Speaker BIt's bigger than my doctor's appointment.
Speaker CIt's bigger than someone betraying me.
Speaker CIt's even bigger than someone persecuting me.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker CBecause there's a bigger picture of a blessing that we have as believers in Jesus Christ.
Speaker CAnd we have so many Christians today who walk around and say, well, the Bible says all things work together for good.
Speaker CBut my, my back is really hurting me today.
Speaker CTherefore, maybe God doesn't love me.
Speaker COr maybe in a more serious note, and we'll get to real stuff here, that, that God loves me.
Speaker CHow could he take someone from me?
Speaker CHow could he allow someone that I love to pass away?
Speaker CAnd those are hard things for us to reconcile.
Speaker BBut again, there is a bigger purpose.
Speaker CThere'S a bigger plan.
Speaker CAnd again, Christians are told that we are not living here as our eternal destination.
Speaker COur eternal destination is with our Lord.
Speaker BIn heaven for eternity.
Speaker BWe're just pilgrims passing through.
Speaker CAnd so to see it from such a shortsighted principle means this.
Speaker CWe miss out on the bigger picture of what God has blessed us in the glory that is to come.
Speaker CSo if I have a bad day today, someone comes up and says, how's your day going?
Speaker CI could answer in a few different ways.
Speaker CI could answer in my circumstantial earthly.
Speaker BMaterial focus and say, well, my day.
Speaker CIs pretty terrible today.
Speaker CI, I, I, I missed every single light.
Speaker BI hit every red light coming into work.
Speaker CI was late, you know, I didn't.
Speaker BMy coffee was cold.
Speaker CI, I, someone betrayed me.
Speaker CSomeone lied to me.
Speaker CI could say all those things and say, my day is terrible.
Speaker COr I could say, no matter what comes on in my life, no matter what goes on around me, I have Jesus as my savior, so it's a good day.
Speaker BThat's.
Speaker CThat's what he's talking about here in Romans 8, 28.
Speaker BBecause all things.
Speaker CAnd, and.
Speaker CAnd a lot of people think this.
Speaker CA lot of people think that if God is in complete control, that he is the author of everything that's going.
Speaker BOn around us, that.
Speaker CThat he's actually the author of evil.
Speaker CIf God is completely sovereign, he is ordaining this evil to happen in my life.
Speaker CThat's not what this is saying.
Speaker CActually.
Speaker CMost of the struggles that we face in our life is because of bad decisions or sinful decisions that we make.
Speaker CSo.
Speaker CAnd a lot of people argue, well, that is not showing God's power.
Speaker CActually, it shows God's power even more because God can take all of our bad decisions.
Speaker COkay, now that's crazy to think about, because I know how many bad decisions.
Speaker BI've made in my life.
Speaker CAnd I look out there and I could only assume that some of you maybe have maybe about half of my.
Speaker BProblems that I've had.
Speaker CAnd if we add all those problems up just in this room, think about how God can make all things good out of all of our bad decisions.
Speaker CHe can take our ashes and move that to beauty.
Speaker CHe can take the sin of this world and his sovereignty and make that good for him.
Speaker CThat shows his complete power.
Speaker CBecause with.
Speaker CWith love comes a choice.
Speaker CAnd if God made us robotic to say, well, I must do this or I must do that, and I don't have a choice in the matter that there's no love there.
Speaker CWhat if.
Speaker CWhat if I told my wife as.
Speaker BShe comes into the church today, honey, you better show that you love me.
Speaker BYou better tell everyone that you love me, or there's gonna be big problems when you get home today.
Speaker CIs that love or is that forcing her?
Speaker BNo, that's forcing.
Speaker BThat's.
Speaker CThat's not love of a choice.
Speaker CAnd so God gives us all the love of choice.
Speaker CBut with that, that choice of love comes also the opposite of that.
Speaker CIf God gives us a choice for love, he also gives us a choice to not love and to walk in rebellion.
Speaker CTherefore, that's why we see sin in this world.
Speaker CGod is not the author of sin.
Speaker BWe see that in the book of James.
Speaker CGod is not the author of sin.
Speaker CBut God does allow that choice to happen.
Speaker CBecause to understand good, there must be evil.
Speaker CBecause if everything was robotically Good.
Speaker CWe would not understand the opposite of that.
Speaker CAnd so with that choice comes this, that I can make bad decisions in my life and cause.
Speaker COr maybe it's not my decision, maybe it's a decision of somebody else.
Speaker CUltimately, it was the decision of Adam and his sin.
Speaker CAnd the world has been marred by sin.
Speaker CAnd so God is so powerful to take all of our bad decisions, all.
Speaker BOf the hardships of this world, all.
Speaker CThe sin in this world, and make.
Speaker BThat good for his purpose and for his kingdom.
Speaker BThat's an amazing thing to think about.
Speaker CAnd so I want you to think about number two.
Speaker BWe have to see things in Romans 8:28 from the big picture, the eternal perspective.
Speaker CWe don't know what is next.
Speaker CGod isn't done.
Speaker BThat's the other thing to think about.
Speaker CA lot of times we think about it from the narrow focus and from the here and now, but we don't know about this circumstance in our life.
Speaker CThis actually might be something that God is going to use for the furtherance.
Speaker BOf the gospel, the furtherance of the kingdom.
Speaker BThere's a lot of stories that we could tell.
Speaker BI was listening to a pastor and trying to remember all of the analogy that he was giving.
Speaker BSo this is not original to me, and if I mess this up, forgive me, but there was a guy who was living in a town and he had a horse, and he was a poor man.
Speaker CAnd everyone in the town thought, hey, you know what?
Speaker CYou could sell your horse to us and you could make some money and you could have some type of wealth.
Speaker BAnd he said, no, I don't want.
Speaker CTo sell my horse.
Speaker CGod's blessed me with this one horse.
Speaker BI'm okay with that.
Speaker CAnd.
Speaker BAnd they said, but if you could.
Speaker CJust sell us your horse, you can make money and you could, you could have everything you wanted.
Speaker BHe says, I have everything I want here.
Speaker CThis is what God has blessed me with.
Speaker BI don't need to know what's next.
Speaker BOne day the horse runs away and they come to him and they say.
Speaker CSee, we were right.
Speaker CYou should have just sold us a horse.
Speaker CYou lost the horse.
Speaker CNow you lost all of your possessions.
Speaker CYou're all by yourself.
Speaker BYou have nothing.
Speaker BAnd he says, well, that's only part of it.
Speaker BWe don't know what comes next.
Speaker BAnd so later on, his horse comes back with 12 more horses.
Speaker BAnd he says, okay, I've got.
Speaker CAnd they say, oh, well, we were wrong.
Speaker CYou were right.
Speaker CSee, now you have more.
Speaker BAnd he says, no, I just have.
Speaker C12 more horses that came.
Speaker BBut I don't know what Tomorrow's gonna bring.
Speaker BSo one day the horses are out there in the.
Speaker BIn the field, and three of them run away.
Speaker CAnd they say, well, you lost a little bit money, but I guess you're okay.
Speaker CThe next day, more left, and there was only one horse left.
Speaker CThey say, see, we were right.
Speaker BYou should have sold all those horses.
Speaker BAnd he goes, no, it's just the here and now.
Speaker BI don't know what tomorrow's gonna bring.
Speaker COne day his son's out in the field.
Speaker BAnd they.
Speaker CThey said, well, you still have that one horse.
Speaker CYou should sell it back to us.
Speaker BThat horse is going to be bad for you.
Speaker BHe goes, no.
Speaker CAnd all of a sudden what happens.
Speaker BIs his son's out in the field working with the horse, and the horse stomps him and breaks both of his son's legs.
Speaker BThey said, see, you should have sold us the horse.
Speaker BAnd he goes, we were right.
Speaker BAnd he goes, no, no.
Speaker CHe goes, that's just what's happening now.
Speaker BI don't know what's happening tomorrow.
Speaker BJust a portion of it.
Speaker BThen the next day, his country goes to war, and his son, because of the broken legs, doesn't have to go fight in the battle that he would surely die in.
Speaker BHe says, hey, look.
Speaker CAnd they say, you're right.
Speaker BAnd right.
Speaker BYou see how it goes.
Speaker BYou see the silliness of the story.
Speaker BThe silliness of the story is that.
Speaker CEveryone has an opinion of the here and now, but we don't know what.
Speaker BGod's going to do next.
Speaker CWe don't know what the blessing is.
Speaker BGoing to be tomorrow.
Speaker CBecause today's bad circumstance might be tomorrow's good circumstance.
Speaker BWe don't know that now.
Speaker CIt might.
Speaker CIt might not be.
Speaker CAnd you might say, I don't.
Speaker CI can't see anything good happening from this.
Speaker CWell, I myself might not see what's happening good, but God might have a.
Speaker BBigger purpose and a bigger plan.
Speaker CI can.
Speaker BI can tell you through various things.
Speaker CThat have happened in my life in.
Speaker BThat moment, I thought it was the worst.
Speaker BI thought it was over.
Speaker BI thought my life was just going to end because of that bad situation.
Speaker BAnd I was talking to a pastor.
Speaker CFriend of mine, and I remember we.
Speaker BWere taking a walk, me and this pastor.
Speaker BWe.
Speaker BWe would take walks and we would just talk about all the.
Speaker BThe struggles that we were going through.
Speaker BAnd I was talking to this pastor, and I said, you know what?
Speaker CIt's just so bad right now.
Speaker BI just can't.
Speaker CI can't face tomorrow.
Speaker CI can't.
Speaker CI can't do what God has called me to do.
Speaker BAnd he says, you know what the irony of all this is?
Speaker BHe says, you're crying today about a situation that you're in, and we're going.
Speaker CTo come back to this very same.
Speaker BPoint in a year from now and.
Speaker CThat problem is going to be resolved and you're going to have another problem that you're crying about.
Speaker CI said, yeah, I know that's.
Speaker CAnd that was the reality of things.
Speaker CAnd so, so, so often what we.
Speaker BDo is we look at the situation.
Speaker COr the circumstance that we're in in that very moment, and we think that that's the end all, be all.
Speaker CBut what the Bible says is that we don't know what's next.
Speaker CAnd God isn't done.
Speaker CGod is not done with his work.
Speaker CI, I want you to see another passage of scripture.
Speaker BIt's in First Corinthians, 1 Corinthians, chapter 13.
Speaker BAnd, and I think that this is a good illustration of what we're talking.
Speaker CAbout here now, First Corinthians, chapter 13.
Speaker BFor most of you, you know that this is the, the passage of scripture about love.
Speaker BAnd, but, but Paul is talking about more here.
Speaker CHe's talking about putting away the childish.
Speaker BThings at the end of this chapter.
Speaker CAnd really what he's saying is, is.
Speaker BGrow up in your spirituality.
Speaker CPut away the spiritually immature thoughts, put.
Speaker BAway the spiritually immature actions.
Speaker CAnd he goes on to explain the principle behind this.
Speaker CAnd, and many times the reason why we're so stuck in the circumstance is because we are in spiritual immaturity.
Speaker CImmaturity leads to a small focus.
Speaker BSome of you that have children understand this.
Speaker BWe were coming back from Thanksgiving and the plane flight and everything was going fine.
Speaker BAnd Michael looks up and he's just like, dad, I'm like, what's wrong, son?
Speaker BHe goes, I don't want to go.
Speaker CTo school on Monday.
Speaker CI said, yeah, I know.
Speaker CIt's okay.
Speaker CHe's like, school is just so, so, so long and it's so hard.
Speaker BAnd I'm like, mike, it's, you only have a few more weeks and it's going to be Christmas break.
Speaker BIt's like, it's only be a few years and you're going to be graduating.
Speaker BYou're going to wish you were in school.
Speaker CAnd he's like, no, right?
Speaker CBecause, because of his immaturity and because of the lack of experience, all he can see is the here and now.
Speaker CI'm going to be stuck in school for another week.
Speaker CBut as his father, I understand the bigger picture.
Speaker CThat son, no this is.
Speaker CThis is only a short amount of.
Speaker BTime you're going to pass through this.
Speaker CIt might be hard now, but you're.
Speaker BGoing to get through it, and then you're going to see other issues that come along.
Speaker BI wish I could go back to school, and that's the only thing I had to worry about.
Speaker BBut.
Speaker CBut the reality here in First Corinthians.
Speaker BIs he says, put away the things of spiritual immaturity.
Speaker BHe says, when I. Verse 11, First Corinthians 13:11.
Speaker BWhen I was a child, I spake as a child, I understood as a child, I thought as a child.
Speaker CBut when I became a man, I put away childish things.
Speaker BAnd so we could take this passage of Scripture to the physical, and like.
Speaker CAs men, we need to mature and we need to move on.
Speaker BAnd that certainly would be applied here.
Speaker CBut I think even on the more spiritual level, it's talking about focusing not on the spiritual immaturity, but on the.
Speaker BThe eternal perspective.
Speaker CVerse 12, he says, for now we see through a glass darkly, which basically says, I'm.
Speaker CI'm looking through a window that's darkened and I can't see everything.
Speaker CI can see a little bit, but I can't see everything.
Speaker CBut then face to face, now I know in part, but then shall I know, even as also I am known, and now abide with faith, hope, charity, these three.
Speaker BBut the greatest of these is charity, meaning this.
Speaker CI can see through the window.
Speaker CI can't see everything, but one day I will be able to see the.
Speaker BBig picture, the way that God sees it.
Speaker CBut until then, I'm going to trust.
Speaker BIn him and the things that he.
Speaker CAllows in my life and the things.
Speaker BThat he brings me and the things that he puts me through.
Speaker CI'm going to trust in him for that.
Speaker CAnd I think it's how all of us could understand this.
Speaker CAnd maybe as we grow in our spiritual maturity, we can see more and more of the picture in the window.
Speaker CBut at the end of the day, all of us are limited in seeing what's next.
Speaker CNone of us know what tomorrow brings.
Speaker CNone of us know what the news is going to be next year, next decade.
Speaker CWe don't know that, but God does.
Speaker CAnd so instead of fretting and stressing and being worried and allowing, all the circumstances of today caused us to not do the things that God has called us to do tomorrow.
Speaker CWhat do we do?
Speaker CWe should just trust in the one who has it under control.
Speaker CAnd so back in Romans 8:28, he says, and we know there's that confidence There, as a believer, we have to have confidence that God is good.
Speaker CAnd we know that all things, not just some things, not just the things that make sense, not just the things that are going my way, but all things.
Speaker CAll things good, bad.
Speaker CAnd by the way, let me pause here.
Speaker CThis is not God saying that every.
Speaker BCircumstance you have in your life will be good.
Speaker BHe just says that all things, good.
Speaker COr bad, easy or difficult, will be working together for the good.
Speaker BNot just his good, even though his good is the ultimate purpose, but also for ours to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Speaker CSo how do we know that God's.
Speaker BPlan is good for us?
Speaker CHow do we know that God's plan is better than our plan for ourselves.
Speaker BOr for the world's plan for us?
Speaker BWell, it's a very simple thought.
Speaker BOur God is a good God.
Speaker BHis.
Speaker BHis character is good.
Speaker CHe's not just.
Speaker CHe's not just good.
Speaker CSometimes like.
Speaker CLike we would walk around today and.
Speaker BMost of you would look at someone that's your friend, that is a.
Speaker BWhat we would call a good person and say, they're good.
Speaker CAre they completely good?
Speaker BWell, no.
Speaker BNo one's completely good.
Speaker BThat's right.
Speaker CAnd the question that a lot of people ask us, why would God allow bad things to happen to good people like this?
Speaker CThis person is a good man.
Speaker CHow could God allow the sickness to.
Speaker BCome into his life?
Speaker CThis person's a good person.
Speaker CWhy would God allow them to go through such a trial?
Speaker CWell, let me tell you something on the theological level, and I know this is going to sting.
Speaker CIt stings me when I say it.
Speaker CBut the Bible says that there is none good, no, not one.
Speaker CFor all have sinned and come short of the glory of God.
Speaker CNone of us deserve what we have in Jesus Christ.
Speaker CThat's the point of Christianity, that that's the point of salvation is that none of us can earn it.
Speaker CNone of us deserve any good.
Speaker CEvery good gift comes from God.
Speaker CIn Thanksgiving season, we think about all the good things that we have.
Speaker CThat is a gift of grace.
Speaker CWhat does the Bible say we deserve?
Speaker CFor the wages or the payment of sin is a hard life.
Speaker CNo death.
Speaker CAnd this isn't popular preaching.
Speaker CThis isn't something that's going to cause me to say everyone's going to love me one day.
Speaker CMaybe you will, maybe you won't.
Speaker CBut I got to say it.
Speaker CThe Bible says what we all deserve is death.
Speaker CPhysical death and spiritual death.
Speaker CBut then, because of the love of our Heavenly Father, he sent his only begotten Son so that we might have life and so that we can love Him.
Speaker CThe Bible says we love God because we're good people, because we were born in America.
Speaker CNo, we love God because he first loved us.
Speaker CAnd so if you go back to Romans 8:28, it says that these things that work together for good, this gift of grace is only for those who love God.
Speaker CWell, how do we love God?
Speaker CWe experience his love to us, to them.
Speaker CWho are the called.
Speaker BFolks?
Speaker BWe are called for a specific purpose.
Speaker CWe're going to talk more about that.
Speaker BIn verses 29 and 30.
Speaker BThis isn't a deterministic way of thinking.
Speaker CThis isn't saying that only certain people are called and other people aren't called.
Speaker CNo, the Bible says, for whosoever shall.
Speaker BCall upon the name of the Lord shall be saved.
Speaker CThe gift is extended to all, but only those who receive the gift and stand in the truth of God are part of the called, part of the ones who are called for the purpose of the glorification of our heavenly Father.
Speaker BAgain, this promise is not for everybody.
Speaker BIf I was to walk up to someone this morning and say to them.
Speaker CHey, God loves you and he wants what's best for you and everything is going to work out for your good.
Speaker CAnd they're sitting there going, well, I.
Speaker BDon'T even believe that God exists.
Speaker CI'm my own God.
Speaker CI worship this or I worship that, or I don't worship any God.
Speaker CAnd I tell them, hey, well, it's okay, God's going to work it out for your good.
Speaker CThat's not what this verse says.
Speaker CThis verse is for the family of God, for the children of God.
Speaker CI hope you see how Romans 8 builds.
Speaker CBecause what does Romans 8:16 say?
Speaker CThe Spirit itself beareth witness with our spirit that we are the children of God.
Speaker CHe's talking to people that are born again believers.
Speaker CWhat's happened is in this world, we've said this with universalism, that God loves everybody, in which he does by the extent of giving grace to everybody and the gift of salvation.
Speaker CBut that doesn't mean that everybody is a child of God.
Speaker CTherefore it doesn't mean that everyone gets to receive this type of promise and.
Speaker BPrinciple of all things work together for.
Speaker CGood to them that love God to.
Speaker BThem who are the called.
Speaker CAnd so this is, this is something exclusively for those who have trusted in.
Speaker BJesus Christ as savior.
Speaker CSo if someone comes up to me and they say, well, I don't believe Jesus is God.
Speaker CI don't believe that he can save me, but I want things to work out good in my Life.
Speaker CAnd can.
Speaker CCan you give me some type of promise?
Speaker CI'm going to tell you that I can't give you any promise other than the fact that there will be inconsistency, there will be pain.
Speaker CThere was someone that said, well, I don't believe in God because there is a world of pain out there.
Speaker BAnd I said, okay, well then don't believe in God.
Speaker BIs there still pain?
Speaker BWell, yeah.
Speaker CThe truth is, is that all of us are going to deal with pain.
Speaker CThe beauty of being a Christian, the beauty of walking with Christ, is that we all go through pain, but we have someone that we're going through it because that's going through it with us that can handle our pain, that can handle our struggles, that can handle our sorrow.
Speaker CAnd so in Romans 8:28, it's a.
Speaker BPromise to those who are in the family of God.
Speaker CAnd so I want you to think about this.
Speaker CHow can we know that God is good?
Speaker CHow can we know that God's plan is right for us?
Speaker CWell, the Bible says that he is the author.
Speaker BThis is Hebrews chapter 12.
Speaker BHe is the author and finisher of our faith.
Speaker CSo if our God is good and he's the author, meaning he's the one who created us, he's the one who initiated salvation.
Speaker CAnd then it says finisher or sustainer, the author and finisher of our faith.
Speaker CAnd so our faith is not in our goodness.
Speaker COur salvation is not in our goodness.
Speaker COur life is not in our goodness.
Speaker CThe Bible tells us that we have been given new life in Christ and He is the author and finisher.
Speaker CSo God being the author and finisher of our faith, is a good God.
Speaker CTherefore we can know that his plan.
Speaker BIs what's best for us.
Speaker CBut ultimately we see this.
Speaker BIt's God's plan and purpose for us that is good.
Speaker BAgain, it's not every circumstance that's good.
Speaker CIt's God's plan and purpose for us.
Speaker BAnd ultimately the plan and purpose for his glory.
Speaker BThe plan and purpose for his kingdom.
Speaker CThe plan and purpose for reaching loss for Christ.
Speaker BThat is what is good.
Speaker CBut we know that God has not come to make our lives miserable.
Speaker CI mean, I could go to verse after verse that speaks to how God wants us to have a rich and abundant life.
Speaker BAnd you could go to John 10:10.
Speaker CThat'S a wonderful verse that speaks to the fact that God is not just wanting us to walk in a life of being miserable.
Speaker CJohn 10:10, it says, the thief cometh not, but for to steal and to kill and to destroy.
Speaker CI am come this is Jesus.
Speaker CThat they might have life and that they might have it more abundantly.
Speaker CGod has called us to have a wonderful life.
Speaker CBut the wonderful life is not about getting everything that I want.
Speaker CThe wonderful life is walking with our Savior and knowing that no matter what I do, no matter what happens around me, no matter where I live, no matter how much I'm persecuted, no matter how many times I stumble, that God has got me and that he's preparing me and that he's sustaining me, and that ultimately I will be with Him.
Speaker CBut that is what is good, and that is what the product of this.
Speaker BType of faith looks like.
Speaker CAnd so, since his plan is always.
Speaker BGood, he is always good.
Speaker CChristians can take confidence that no matter what the circumstances, no matter what our environment is around us, that God is actively taking care of us and will ultimately make all things right according to his good purpose.
Speaker CWith this knowledge, we.
Speaker CWe can live a life of spiritual contentment and joy and peace.
Speaker CNow, I want to take you to.
Speaker BAnother passage of scripture to kind of conclude our thoughts, because what does this look like?
Speaker CSo what does the life of a.
Speaker BChristian who Trust in Romans 8:28 look like?
Speaker BWell, for many people it's taught that.
Speaker CIf I trust in Romans 8:28 and I have just enough faith, everything's going to be okay.
Speaker CThat God's not going to allow my children to go through pain, that, that in the country that I live in, we're going to have victories and we're going to have successes and that God's going to make my bank account big and that my health is going to be completely perfect.
Speaker CNo, that's not the outcome of living a life trusting in Romans 8:28, we go to Philippians chapter four and we see exactly what it looks like.
Speaker CBecause the same author of the book of Romans, Paul, that says, look, the.
Speaker BThe sufferings that you face now are nothing in comparison to the glory that you have in heaven.
Speaker CWe know that all things work together.
Speaker BFor good to them that love God, to them who are the called according to his purpose.
Speaker CAnd by the way, his purpose, not.
Speaker BOur own, but Philippians chapter four.
Speaker BWe read it this morning.
Speaker CThis is the natural, or may I say supernatural outflow of a Christian's life who was walking with the confidence to know that God is going to make all things right, that God is going.
Speaker BTo make all things good.
Speaker CBecause there's a lot of times in our life that we say, yeah, I quote Romans 8:28, But I'm miserable today.
Speaker CI don't know if God's going to handle this.
Speaker CAnd we might even.
Speaker BMaybe we don't say it, but we.
Speaker CMight even doubt if God is going.
Speaker BTo make all things good.
Speaker CWell, that type of believer is not going to be walking according to Philippians chapter four.
Speaker BIt's going to be the complete opposite.
Speaker CBut look at it with me in.
Speaker BVerse four in Philippians chapter four.
Speaker CThis is Paul.
Speaker CNow again, where is Paul?
Speaker CPaul is in prison when he writes this.
Speaker CPaul is not in a resort on.
Speaker BThe banks of the Mediterranean Sea and living the good life.
Speaker CSo Paul says, I. I know that what God is doing right now for me is going to work together for good.
Speaker CTherefore, rejoice in the Lord always.
Speaker BAnd again I say rejoice.
Speaker BYou ever heard a Christian that say, I just don't have a reason to praise God today?
Speaker BHow dare we say that?
Speaker BJob says, the Lord gives and the Lord takes away.
Speaker BBlessed be the name of the Lord.
Speaker CYou know, sometimes it's easy.
Speaker BSometimes it's very easy.
Speaker BGenesis, Jehovah Jireh.
Speaker BGod will provide.
Speaker BWhen is it easy to claim Jehovah Jireh?
Speaker BWhen you're being provided for?
Speaker BWhen our son went through surgery and we were praying through different things and we there's Jehovah Rafi, which is God.
Speaker BGod heals.
Speaker BIt was so easy for us to.
Speaker CClaim that God is a healer when.
Speaker BOur son was healed.
Speaker CIt's so easy to claim God's love when we feel the love.
Speaker CBut that's not when we're to rejoice.
Speaker CWhat does he say here?
Speaker CRejoice in the Lord when it's good.
Speaker CRejoice in the Lord always.
Speaker BAnd again I say rejoice.
Speaker CWe say Jehovah Jireh.
Speaker CWhen our bank account isn't what we.
Speaker BExpect it to be, we say that.
Speaker CGod is the healer, even when we don't necessarily see the healing.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker CBecause we're to rejoice in all senses of the word.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker CBecause he is ultimately going to heal.
Speaker CHe is ultimately going to provide.
Speaker CAnd so it's so easy for us in abundance to praise.
Speaker CBut are we willing to be like Job and say, the Lord gives and the Lord takes away?
Speaker CBlessed be the name of the Lord.
Speaker CCan we worship him in the midst of the struggle?
Speaker CBecause that's the true test.
Speaker CThe true test of our inner peace and our inner joy is when things get tough, are we willing to worship him?
Speaker CAnd he says, rejoice in the Lord always.
Speaker CAnd again I say, rejoice.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker CLet your moderation be known unto all men.
Speaker BThe Lord is at hand.
Speaker CWhen we have this type of praise.
Speaker CWhen we have this type of worship, when we have that type of testimony that says, hey, even though I'm going through this trial, God is good.
Speaker CWhat happens is that the world knows that the Lord is at hand.
Speaker COur moderation, our lifestyle is made known unto all.
Speaker CThat's when the testimony resonates.
Speaker CIf I came up to you and said, hey, you know, God just gave me a million dollars, praise God for that.
Speaker CHe is so good and he's providing for me.
Speaker CAnd, and, and you're sitting there going.
Speaker BWell, I could have used a million dollars.
Speaker CI don't have.
Speaker CI don't have enough money to pay for my next meal.
Speaker CWhat's going to happen?
Speaker CThe thing is, is that it's not.
Speaker BAbout the circumstance that gives us the praise.
Speaker CIt's about letting the Lord be made known.
Speaker CAnd so it's yes, God is going to give us abundance.
Speaker BHe's going to talk about that here in a moment.
Speaker CBut I want you to see that it's worshiping God in the blessings of materials and in the blessings of the spiritual in the midst of having nothing.
Speaker CAnd he goes farther here.
Speaker BHe says, be careful or anxious for nothing.
Speaker BSo he says, this the result of.
Speaker CLiving the life of saying, God's going to make it all good.
Speaker CWe know that all things work together for good.
Speaker CWhat's the result?
Speaker CHe says it in verse 6, be.
Speaker BCareful or anxious for nothing.
Speaker BThat word careful just means anxious, having anxieties.
Speaker CHe says, be careful for nothing but in everything.
Speaker CSo don't ever get anxious about anything but in everything.
Speaker CWhat does it say?
Speaker CBy prayer and supplication.
Speaker CWith thanksgiving.
Speaker BWith thanksgiving.
Speaker BLet your request be made known unto God.
Speaker BBring it all to him.
Speaker BWhy?
Speaker BBecause he's in control.
Speaker CHe's the one that cares for us.
Speaker CHe's the one that has the good plan.
Speaker CInstead of struggling with the things that we cannot control, we get over to the one who can control those things.
Speaker BWe say, lord, I don't understand why this is happening.
Speaker BI don't understand why I have to go through this.
Speaker CI don't understand why I got this news.
Speaker CI can't reconcile this with anything right now.
Speaker CBut I know you are good and I know you're going to take care of me.
Speaker BAnd it says, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known unto God.
Speaker BI give it over to him.
Speaker BHow freeing is it to know that.
Speaker CI am not in control?
Speaker BGod is in control, folks.
Speaker BAll of us today would realize, hopefully we should realize that in comparison to God, we are so insignificant.
Speaker BOur power is limited, our wisdom is Limited.
Speaker BOur resources are limited.
Speaker CAnd how silly would it be for us to say, I've got it under control.
Speaker CGod, no, we give it over to him because eventually, whether you find out.
Speaker BEarly or later, you're going to be overwhelmed by the circumstances of this world.
Speaker BAnd he says, give it over to him.
Speaker BAnd what's the result of that?
Speaker CWhat's the result of living with this type of confidence that all things are going to work together for good?
Speaker BAnd the peace, verse 7.
Speaker BAnd the peace of God which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.
Speaker BIt's a type of peace that the world can't understand.
Speaker BIt's, it's, it's a, it's a peace regardless of the circumstance in our life.
Speaker BIt's a peace that passes all comprehension in this world, and it's only found through Jesus Christ.
Speaker BHe goes further to say this.
Speaker BIn verse eight, he says, then we.
Speaker CSet our minds on the things that are proper, right?
Speaker CBecause if we're always in doubt that God is good, if we're always in doubt that God's plan is right, we're eventually going to set our minds on the things that are not of God.
Speaker CAnd that's why we find ourselves falling into traps of sin.
Speaker CAnd, and he says, finally, brethren, whatsoever things are true, whatsoever things are honest, whatsoever things are just, whatsoever things are pure, whatsoever things are lovely, whatsoever things are of good report.
Speaker CIf there be any virtue and if there be any praise, think on these things.
Speaker CHe says, you want to have pure thoughts.
Speaker CThink about the goodness of God.
Speaker CDwell upon what he has done for you.
Speaker CDwell upon what he is going to do for you.
Speaker CAnd he says, those things which you have both learned and received and heard.
Speaker BAnd seen in me.
Speaker CThis is Paul speaking.
Speaker CDo, and the God of peace shall be with you.
Speaker BSpeaks of the presence of God, the provisions of God.
Speaker CVerse 10.
Speaker CHe speaks of how they gave him.
Speaker CHe says, but I rejoice in the Lord greatly that now at the last, your care of me have flourished again.
Speaker CMeaning he's thankful for these people that have given him goods to support him.
Speaker BHe says, wherein ye also careful, but ye lacked opportunity.
Speaker CAnd then this is verse 11.
Speaker CVerse 11 is the, is the culmination.
Speaker BEssentially.
Speaker CHe says, not that I speak in.
Speaker BRespect of want, just I don't need to tell you what I'm struggling with.
Speaker CFor I have learned.
Speaker CThis is not something that naturally happens.
Speaker CWe learn this in our spiritual maturity.
Speaker BIn whatsoever state, I am therewith to be content.
Speaker BMeaning this, whatever's happening in my life, I'm Content?
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker BBecause I have Jesus.
Speaker BI have salvation.
Speaker CNow.
Speaker BI'm preaching this to you not as someone who's accomplished this in my life.
Speaker BThere are still days that I wake up and I'm not content because I want something more.
Speaker BI want something different.
Speaker BI want.
Speaker CI want to have more material blessing.
Speaker BBut what does he say here?
Speaker BHe says, there.
Speaker CThere will be days.
Speaker CHe goes, Verse 12.
Speaker CI know how to be abased, which means torn down, pulled down to the lowest state.
Speaker BPaul understood that.
Speaker CAnd I know how to abound, meaning, I know how to be lifted up.
Speaker CI know how to succeed.
Speaker CI know how to have all this type of blessing everywhere and in all things.
Speaker BI am instructed both to be full.
Speaker BHe says, there's been times where I've been full.
Speaker BI'm Vince.
Speaker BSome of us at Thanksgiving understood that feeling.
Speaker CBe full.
Speaker CAnd then he says, and to be hungry, both to abound and to suffer need.
Speaker CHe says, I've been in both at the same time.
Speaker BI can be content in both.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker CBecause of the blessings of God in my life.
Speaker BBecause He's a good God.
Speaker BBecause he has an ultimate plan for my life.
Speaker CAnd then we get to another verse.
Speaker BPhilippians 4:13, another verse that gets highly misquoted.
Speaker BI can do all things through Christ, which strengtheneth me.
Speaker CThat doesn't mean that I can do whatever I want and God will just.
Speaker BBless me because I'm a Christian.
Speaker CVery similar to Romans 8:28.
Speaker CRomans 8:28 is not about just loving God, and He gives me everything I want.
Speaker CPhilippians 4:13 is not just about, hey, just doing whatever I want to do and God will bless it.
Speaker CNo, it says this in verse 13.
Speaker CAgain, context.
Speaker BStruggles, blessings.
Speaker CWhatever God has for me, he has.
Speaker BGiven me the strength to do it.
Speaker CIf God is allowing me to go through this trial right now, he has given me the strength to overcome this.
Speaker BIn his power and his provisions.
Speaker CSo we really kind of see Romans.
Speaker B8:28 and Philippians 4:13 as, as we would call, like, verses that, that cross across the pages.
Speaker BAnd what we can see here is this.
Speaker CRomans 8:28 speaks of the provisions.
Speaker BAll things work together for good.
Speaker BRight?
Speaker BAll the circumstances that I have, he's.
Speaker CGoing to provide for me.
Speaker BGood.
Speaker BAnd then Philippians 4:13 speak of the power.
Speaker BI can do all things through Christ, which strengthens me.
Speaker CAnd so God gives us the provisions of goodness in our life, no matter.
Speaker BWhat the circumstances are, to say that he is good.
Speaker CAnd then he gives us the power to utilize those gifts for his kingdom.
Speaker CAnd so I want you to think.
Speaker BAbout that here this morning, that we must defer our expectations to God's outcome.
Speaker BWe must see the eternal perspective, the big picture.
Speaker CWe have to understand that we don't know what's next, but God is not done working yet.
Speaker CWe have to understand that our God, the author and finisher of our faith, is good.
Speaker BAnd we must understand that it's God's plan and purpose for our lives and not our own plan and purpose.
Speaker BThat's what it means to rest in.
Speaker CThe knowledge of God's goodness.
Speaker CAnd then, then, then we can say, and we know.
Speaker CAnd this takes faith.
Speaker CThis takes complete, in utter faith.
Speaker CBecause it's not what we see.
Speaker CBecause what we see is in this.
Speaker BWorld, pain, suffering, struggles.
Speaker BBut we take.
Speaker CRemember what faith is he just talked.
Speaker BAbout in Romans 8.
Speaker BIt's believing and having hope in something that we don't see.
Speaker BSo it takes faith to know that all, all things work together for good.
Speaker BNot all things are good, but all things that happen in this world, God will make for good to them that love God to them who are the called.
Speaker BI want you to see this last phrase here, and then we're done.
Speaker BAccording to his purpose, not Josh's purpose, not so and so's purpose, but it's good in his purpose.
Speaker BAnd what's his purpose?
Speaker BThis.
Speaker BHis purpose is to extend the gift of grace so that so many people, so that all people.
Speaker BHe is not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
Speaker BMeaning this.
Speaker BThe purpose of this life is to glorify God, worship him by proclaiming his goodness and his gospel to all those around us.
Speaker BMy struggles can point people to Christ.
Speaker CMy inadequacies, my infirmities, as Romans 8.
Speaker BSays, can point people to Christ.
Speaker BI'm gonna.
Speaker BI'm gonna tell you something this morning.
Speaker BIt's very hard to say, but.
Speaker BBut we're gonna say it.
Speaker BOur losses can point people to Christ.
Speaker CBecause when we stand in the truth of God, what better testimony is it than we sit here and go, in my pain and my tears and my brokenness, God is still good.
Speaker CHow.
Speaker CHow much more does that preach than.
Speaker BSomeone who has everything and goes, you know what?
Speaker CI need a third private jet just.
Speaker BTo make my life better.
Speaker BThat.
Speaker BThat's not the gospel.
Speaker CThat's not Paul.
Speaker BThat.
Speaker CThat.
Speaker CThat's not what it means to walk in faith.
Speaker CWhat it means to walk in faith is I praise him in the good.
Speaker CI know how to abound.
Speaker BI know how to be abased.
Speaker CI know how to be full.
Speaker BI know how to be Hungry.
Speaker CHow many of us would say, today, no matter what's going on in my.
Speaker BLife around me, God is good.
Speaker BI'm not going to fret.
Speaker CI'm going to be as Paul says.
Speaker BIn Philippians 4, 11, I know how to be content.
Speaker BWhatever circumstance I'm in, I'm going to be content.
Speaker CIt doesn't mean you have to like.
Speaker BThe bad things going on around you.
Speaker CThis doesn't mean that you celebrate pain.
Speaker CThis doesn't mean that you celebrate loss.
Speaker CBiblically speaking, there's a time for mourning, there's a time for sadness.
Speaker CThere's a time to recognize evil around us.
Speaker CSo it's not justifying evil around us by any stretch of the imagination.
Speaker CIt's actually condemning that and knowing that God is going to address that evil around us.
Speaker CBut until then, we keep trusting in Him.
Speaker BNow, will God answer your prayer?
Speaker BHe might answer your prayer in the affirmative.
Speaker BThat's not my job to say.
Speaker CYou might be praying for God to.
Speaker BWork a miracle in your life, and he works that miracle in your life.
Speaker BBut I have to say the other side of the coin, you might be praying for something for years, and he doesn't give you what you expected.
Speaker BAt the end of the day, God still is a God of miracles.
Speaker BHe's still a healer.
Speaker CHe is still the same God, the.
Speaker BPart of the Red Sea.
Speaker CHe's still the same God that made.
Speaker BThe sun stand still there in the book of Joshua.
Speaker CBut at the same time, God has.
Speaker BA bigger plan and a bigger purpose than our expectations.
Speaker CAnd so if God doesn't answer the prayer the way that you're praying, it, it doesn't mean that he stopped loving you.
Speaker BIt just means that there's a different plan and purpose.
Speaker BAnd I pray that all of us can see that and understand that and rest in that.
Speaker BHere this morning.
Speaker BIt's a difficult passage.
Speaker BIt's still.
Speaker BIt's still because of our experience, is still a passage that many of us will struggle with at some point in our life.
Speaker CBut at the end of the day.
Speaker BWhat we do is we look to it and we say, not a question of why does God allow bad things to happen to good people?
Speaker BIt's the other way around.
Speaker BAnd I'm just going to say this.
Speaker BThis morning, the true question we should be asking is, why does God allow good things to happen to bad people?
Speaker BBecause that's what he's doing.
Speaker CHe's allowing beautiful things to happen to.
Speaker BPeople that don't deserve grace.
Speaker BThat's essentially what grace is.
Speaker BGrace is getting something that we don't deserve.
Speaker BAnd so as a Christian, if I see everything as a blessing, if Thanksgiving.
Speaker CIs every day of the week, every day of the year, and I say.
Speaker BWow, I didn't deserve to wake up today.
Speaker BI don't deserve this family that I have.
Speaker BI don't deserve this job that I have.
Speaker BI don't deserve this day at all.
Speaker CBut at the end of the day, this is.
Speaker BIf we see it that way, every day is a blessing.
Speaker BIf we see every gift is a.
Speaker CBlessing, we're a lot more willing to live in that life of contentment and.
Speaker BJoy and rejoicing in worship.
Speaker CFolks, if you can only worship on.
Speaker BDays that things are going well.
Speaker BIt's like Paul says, and this is.
Speaker BI'm preaching to myself.
Speaker BBut it's like Paul says, get rid of those things that are childish.
Speaker BIt's childish to only be happy when things are going good for me.
Speaker BLike, my kids are only happy when they get candy.
Speaker BBut dad sees the bigger picture and says, son, it's not good to have candy.
Speaker BThanksgiving, we went to this candy store and there was these big candy.
Speaker BIt's called Candy Barrel.
Speaker CAnd they filled up their candy and they're eating candy.
Speaker BAnd I'm like, guys, don't get used to this.
Speaker BThis isn't every day.
Speaker BYou're not going to go home and.
Speaker CGo to Candy Barrel and fill up your candy every day.
Speaker CWhy?
Speaker BBecause I understand as the Father, the.
Speaker CBigger picture of the.
Speaker BThe problem with that same thing with God.
Speaker BSometimes God allows to us to understand this.
Speaker BBut there are certain times where we.
Speaker CCan'T understand why God isn't doing this for us.
Speaker BBut we just have to trust that he's dad and he knows the bigger picture.
Speaker BAnd I'm going to trust in his goodness.
Speaker BHe's never going to fail you.
Speaker BThe Bible says that he will never leave us nor forsake us, that nothing.
Speaker BWe're going to get to this in Romans 8.
Speaker BAnd I'm just wanting to get there so bad.
Speaker BNothing can separate us from his love.
Speaker BAnd that's why we have to say, okay, it's okay.
Speaker BIt's okay.
Speaker BToday we're going to make it through.
Speaker BThere's days where you just cry all day.
Speaker BThat's okay.
Speaker BHe's there with you and you're crying.
Speaker CHe's there with you in your questions.
Speaker CIt's okay to ask God questions.
Speaker CIt's not okay to question God's goodness, but it's okay to ask God questions.
Speaker CAnd sometimes he gives us answers and sometimes he doesn't.
Speaker CAnd we say, okay, Lord, I don't.
Speaker BKnow the answers, but I give you, I give you the glory.
Speaker BRemember, be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication, with thanksgiving, let your request be made known.
Speaker BCome to him this morning.
Speaker BYou're struggling with that verse.
Speaker BI don't see how it's working together for good.
Speaker BThe first thing you gotta take care of is your eternal destination.
Speaker BIf you've got that taken care of, it's then understanding how God meets you in your daily walk, in your daily struggles.
Speaker BBut for many of us, it's a matter of faith.
Speaker CIt's a matter of trusting that God.
Speaker BHas the best plan for me.
Speaker CAnd also to know that God is not the author of evil.
Speaker BThere's a lot of people that, that will say this because of whatever happened.
Speaker BGod must not love me because he did this to me.
Speaker BJust know that God did not author evil.
Speaker BEvil is the absence of God.
Speaker BBut again, evil must be there because of the good.
Speaker BHate must be there because of the love.
Speaker BAnd what we have to understand is that we have a choice.
Speaker BDo we have a choice to trust in God or we have a choice to question God?
Speaker BWell, we have a choice to do both.
Speaker BThe question is, is what are we going to do here this morning?
Speaker BAre we going to trust in Him?
Speaker BAre we going to give the glory to Him?
Speaker BThere's times of abundance, that's when we give him praise.
Speaker BThere's times of brokenness, that's when we give him praise.
Speaker CAnd I don't know where you stand this morning.
Speaker BSome of you, you might be in.
Speaker CThat day of abundance.
Speaker BFor some of you, you might be in that day of brokenness.
Speaker BEither way, the day of blessing and the day of brokenness is still a blessing in Jesus Christ.
Speaker BAnd so here this morning, you might need to come to him.
Speaker CJust say, lord, give me the strength, give me the faith, give me the hope that I can look to you in the midst of everything in my.
Speaker BLife and say, I know that all things work together for good.
Speaker BHelp me see the bigger picture.
Speaker BSo I'm going to ask if you're able to stand with me here this morning, every head bowed, every eye closed as the music plays Today a time of response.
Speaker BWe only went over one main verse that we know.
Speaker BCan you say that for your own testimony this morning?
Speaker BDo you know that all things.
Speaker CAll.
Speaker BThings work together for good?
Speaker BTo those who love God, to those who are the called according to his purpose.
Speaker CIs the expectation my purpose or his purpose?
Speaker BWell, if it's my purpose, I'm going to see all the flaws.
Speaker BBut if it's his purpose, I'm going to trust that he has what's best for me.
Speaker CSome might say, well, how does this hardship in my life work out to the bigger picture?
Speaker BThat's above my pay grade.
Speaker BI don't know how all of that's going to work.
Speaker BBut we trust that God's got it all under control.
Speaker BAnd when we trust that, it allows.
Speaker CUs to live with peace and contentment.
Speaker BAnd hope and joy and worship and all the things that God has called us to do in our lives.
Speaker BAnd so here this morning, maybe you.
Speaker CNeed to start with just faith in Him.
Speaker BIf you haven't trusted in Jesus Christ as your personal savior, if you're living in the Bible says the wages of sin, today is the day that you can trust in Him.
Speaker BHe sent his only begotten Son for you to die on the cross.
Speaker BThe conquered death through the resurrection.
Speaker BAs the song is playing here, just as I am, we come broken to be mended.
Speaker CWe come wounded to be healed.
Speaker BWe come desperate to be mended.
Speaker CAnd so ultimately here this morning, how, how many of us are willing to.
Speaker BCome to him in brokenness and say.
Speaker CI need you Lord, for salvation.
Speaker CBut maybe we've done that.
Speaker BBut maybe for some of us, we need the Lord sustaining power and grace in our life to see his plan.
Speaker CIn the midst of the inconsistency.
Speaker BAnd so this morning, think about this.
Speaker CAre we willing to trust in the.
Speaker BConsistency of our Lord in the midst of a world of inconsistence?
Speaker BFor some of us, we need to do that here today.
Speaker BSo in this time of invitation, you can come forward, some have already come.
Speaker BYou can kneel here at the steps, or you can kneel in your pew and you can ask the Lord to help you see his plan and purpose in your life.
Speaker BBecause he has a plan and purpose for your life.
Speaker BAnd sometimes we have to just be open and ready to follow that plan and purpose.
Speaker CHis plan might be for you to.
Speaker BHave a good circumstance.
Speaker BHis plan might be for you to have a difficult circumstance.
Speaker CBut at the end of the day.
Speaker BIt'S all for his glory.
Speaker BMay we give him his glory here.
Speaker BThis Lord, I pray that you be in this time of invitation, working hearts and lives.
Speaker BWe thank you for all that you do for us in Jesus name.
Speaker BAmen.
Speaker BAs the music plays, some have already come.
Speaker BFollow as the Lord leads here this morning.
